demanding immediate and specific strategies to curb gun violence. and he is promising that this time washington won't just talk about it. cbs 5 reporter grace lee on his call to action. >> reporter: it is a promise and says it's divergence for this president. before the connecticut school shooting he was usually generally neutral about anything related to the second amendment. today he not only called for action, he even gave a deadline for results and he wants some answers by january. >> we may never know all the reasons why this tragedy happened. we do know that every day since, more americans have died of gun violence. >> reporter: five days after the sandy hook shooting in newtown, president obama says our country needs more than gun control. we need a solution to stop the violence. that's why he is creating a new interagency task force led by vice president joe biden. >> this is not some washington commission. this is not something where folks are going to be studying

the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read and then pushed aside. this is a team that has a very specific task to pull together real reforms right now. >> reporter: much of the political focus so far has been on gun legislation. >> we have failed our children. >> reporter: today, senator barbara boxer is suggesting a different route beefing up school security. >> what it would do, it would help schools use the existing program to provide schools with more resources to install tip lines, surveillance equipment, secured entrances, metal detectors and other important safety measures. >> i think it's a wonderful idea that the federal is looking to expand funding for school security. >> reporter: ken trump says after the columbine shootings in 199, security was also a priority then. since, he says, funding has dropped off. he points out that teachers at

sandy hook elementary actually have lockdown training and the school had a surveillance system at the front door. while it didn't stop the shooter, it did delay him. >> it is extremely tough to look at sandy hook and believe that the security systems and the training weren't -- they certainly didn't have the desired outcome of saving people but the outcome could have been two, three, four times worse had they not had the measures that they did in place. >> reporter: senator boxer has another idea that she is pushing. she wants the national guard to take a bigger role in school security. she says they are already in more than 3,000 neighborhoods across the country. and many of them are familiar with local first responders. but they would still need the official approval of the state governor. i'm grace lee, cbs 5. another very emotional day in newtown. three more children and a teacher were laid to rest. hundreds of firefighters formed a long line outside a church in

newtown for the funeral of daniel barden. the 7-year-old wanted to grow up to be a firefighter. he was one of three funerals today for children killed in the sandy hook school shooting. fellow students caroline previdi and charlotte bacon were also laid to rest. bagpipes also played for 27- year-old teacher victoria soto, as mourners packed a church in nearby stratford for her funeral. soto has been hailed as a hero for shielding her students from the gunman. >> she gave her life for those kids. it breaks my heart. >> reporter: well-wishers placed more stuffed animals at the memorial set up to honor the 20 children and 6 teachers. >> it makes me really sad. i mean, we brought the stuffed animals because we wanted to give the children a christmas. >> i had twin girls that are 6- year-old old and in elementary school and it really hit hard. >> reporter: many say seeing all the flowers, balloons,

candles and toys is sad but also inspiring. >> when you see this display, now that there's still love in the world. >> reporter: an outpouring of support for families who are enduring unmeasurable loss. connecticut's governor has declared friday a day of mourning and has asked churches to ring bells 26 times at 9:30 a.m. one for each victim to mark a week since their deaths. more on the developments from newtown coming up on the "cbs evening news" and stay with cbs 5 and cbssf.com for continuing coverage of the elementary school tragedy. checking bay area headlines here at home an "oakland post" office up and operating again after a hazmat scare forced an evacuation. the laurel district branch on high street had to be shut down about 10 a.m. and the building cleared for investigation. it turned out to be a leaking pepper gas canister in a drawer, the kind they use to keep dogs away. eight people were treated at

the scene. and the building reopened by noon. grisly discovery inside a burning storage unit in campbell. firefighters found a body after dousing the flames about 1:30 this morning. they described the unit on cunis drive as about the size of a walk-in closet. investigators suspect the person may have been sleeping -- living there. foul play is not suspected. and good news for parents bad news for some dentists. fluoride will finally be added to south bay drinking water. santa clara valley water district okayed that plan meaning san jose will no longer be the nation's largest city without the dental preventative. it will take about two years though to get the system up and running. well, bitter cold blanketing the bay area. you can see it from frost covered car windows and in some north bay communities, people were scraping the ice off their windshields. julie watts says there's another change on the way. julie. >> that's right. i'm in for paul tonight filling in or weather duty and i can tell you temperatures already

at least one republican a looming vote on a republican plan to avert the

"fiscal cliff" is exposing some party fractures tonight. at least one republican congressman says he objects to house speaker john boehner's plan b meaning higher taxes on incomes of a million dollars or more but despite that criticism, speaker boehner insists that he has the votes in congress to pass his plan. both sides are still a few billion dollars apart. >> the president's offer of $1.3 trillion in revenues and $850 billion in spending reductions fails to meet the test that the president promised the american people a balanced approach. >> we should be raising taxes on the wealthiest few as a means of reducing the deficit. i have also said that i'm willing to identify some spending cuts that make sense. >> if senate democrats defeat plan b, boehner says president obama will see the largest tax increase in history. the president says bring it! he vowed to veto the bill if it

comes to his desk. . the military will seek the death penalty. it was announced after a hearing for sergeant robert bales accused of killing 16 afghan villagers during a shooting last march. defense attorneys say bales suffers from ptsd and was on his fourth deployment to a war zone. the owner of an east bay motel shut down because of complaints about prostitution wants to reopen. neighbors say no way. cbs 5 reporter da lin on how the owner plans to make things different this time. >> reporter: neighbors say this motel for years was a place of misery, a hub for prostitution and child sex trafficking. >> her pimp followed her and beat her up by the building. it was gruesome. >> she jumped out a third-story to get away from the pimps. >> reporter: one high school

student said a pimp walked out of the motelrecruit her. >> he harassed me, followed me to where i was going just trying to convince me to come with him. >> reporter: stories like that are why neighbors and businesses in this lake merritt neighborhood want economy inn to remain closed. the motel owner and his attorneys met with neighbors to talk about about changes. >> to work together and change the neighborhood. >> reporter: he says an out-of- state hotel management company would run the inn. he would designate one room as a police station so officers could monitor the place. he would also set up 16 cameras. >> he opened that property for close to 35 years. i have never seen it in my time there be anything but a brothel. >> why would i think after all those years him allowing all that to happen and not caring about our community that all of a sudden he's changed?

>> reporter: robin glover is the principal at dewey continuation high school which is located in front of the economy inn. >> people come here for a second chance. and so we want to steer them in the right direction. >> reporter: the motel owner's attorney said the motel was never the problem. it was the neighborhood that caused the problems. >> no motel can rise above the neighborhood so the neighborhood has to rise along with the motel. >> reporter: the shutdown order will keep this motel closed until july 31. this is the 260 page petition the owner filed asking the judge to allow him to take down the fence and reopen this motel and because of the new security measures, folks familiar with the case tell me that the judge will have no choice but to allow him to reopen. a judge will have a hearing on this topic on january 16. live in oakland, i'm da lin, cbs 5. the ads say milk does a body good.

memorial today in l-a, thous of mourners celebrated the late singer's life. instead of flowers they gave donat fans say good-bye to singer

jenni rivera. in a public memorial in l.a. thousands of mourner celebrated her life. instead of flowers, they gave donations to the jenni rivera love foundation and a single white rose. rivera and six others died this month when her learjet crashed in northern mexico. a private burial for rivera will be held separately. the best way to get around san francisco, walking of course. this city is one of the most walkable in the country. no doubt. and the holidays bring visitors from all around the world. and today, mayor lee announced some plans for a new safety campaign to focus on hot spots, most dangerous to pedestrians. >> really doing a lot more enforcement strategically in all the area we need to with not only stops, not only enforcement and ticketing, but a serious effort to remind people that these are going to be spots where we are going to pay a lot more attention.

afternoon but watch as it spreads through overnight thursday into friday. scatters showered friday, wind on saturday. we'll have concerns eventually for downtown power lines and trees and something to be mindful of heading into the weekend. winter storm watch is in effect in the high country for the holidays. snow levels around 1,000 feet thursday. by friday afternoon, we are talking 3,000 feet. and anywhere from 6 to 13" of new snow. grab those chains and keep in mind some wind gusts upwards of 40 miles per hour up in the high country. down here, in the bay, lows overnight tonight still chilly, not quite as chilly as yesterday thanks to the approaching storm. i think we'll still fee a few spots especially south that will reach freezing but most of us in the mid- to upper 30s with a few exceptions east bay, you might be just a tad bit cooler. tomorrow, temperatures a bit more mild again thanks to the approaching storm. we'll see temperatures in the mid- to upper 50s for the most

part. but the big story is the rain and it is heading our way so starting tomorrow, dry for most of the day, showers beginning in the north bay in the afternoon. friday, wet and windy. saturday, more of the same. continuing to see showers and wind for sunday. now, monday christmas eve i think we'll see some lingering showers but probably not quite as heavy as we see this weekend. here's a little christmas present for you. one day of dry weather. things may shift a little bit but dry for christmas and rain returns thereafter. >> that's why we have rudolph, right? just in case. >> all right. >> to light the way. >> thank you. well, milk is a great source of nutrition for young children. but new research suggests that too much of a good thing may come with a trade-off. dr. kim mulvihill reports. >> reporter: the sherwood family gets plenty of mill world cup their meals. >> probably two to three glasses a day, plenty of milk

in their meals. >> reporter: too much may be a bad thing. researchers looked at daily milk intake as it related to iron and vitamin d levels and about 1300 preschoolers. they found that two cups a day seemed optimal for most kids. drinking more than that lowers iron stores. >> excessive amounts of milk which was more like three to four cups a day or more was an increase in levels of a chemical regarding iron in your body. >> reporter: iron deficiency is linked to anemia and delays in brain development. vitamin d helps build strong bones. itkids who drink milk may not be eating foods rich in iron. some children with dark skin may need supplements because their body doesn't make enough vitamin d in sunlight. melanie has no plans to limit

healthy a claim the meat industry disputes. >> they are given mostly to promote the growth of these animals to make them bigger faster. >> reporter: so why take on trader joe's? well, they already sell some meat and poultry raised without antibiotics. advocates want them to go whole hog. >> we expect more from them. it's time for trader joe's to once again be a leader and to take this important step. >> reporter: another reason? traders sells more private label products so it has more control over its suppliers and most antibiotic-free products can be morning expensive. these organic hamburger patties produced without antibiotics cost $2 more something to chew on this holiday season. ♪ trader joe's, give us meat without drugs ♪ >> reporter: activists hope they will spark systemwide changes in the way meat is produced. the meat industry contends there's no proof that there's a link between antibiotic use and farm animals and declining effectiveness in humans.
